We stayed with friends from our days in Brazil and on Sunday we went to the national archeological museum. I forgot to take my camera so the photos I have are from their iPad.
The first couple of pictures are of graves. They are on separate floors of the museum because the graves were found this way; one deepre under ground than the other.
This picture shows to two fosses (lit), one below and one above
This is the bottom fosse. People were buried in fetal position in preparation for rebirth. It is surprising Christians don't do the same.
In the picture Edgar is eating the papa rellena and a tamal and the stew sit in front of him.
Yesterday we visited the woman who owns the apartment where we are staying. It is another world
Their apartment looks out on a golf course in the very middle of the fancy part of Lima. The traffic is daunting. Even coming home at 10PM on a Monday night it was bumper to bumper.
A note on coffee in Peru. In the morning a very thick coffee is prepared and put in the fridge. Then during the day, when anyone wants coffee, water is boiled to which you add some of the thicker coffee. Fresh daily instant coffee.
On the other hand you can buy Nescafe instant coffee that is nothing like the instant coffee sold in the US. Very strong and not bad. Even so, a friend of ours once said to me "Nescafe no es cafe".
We ate a new dish for me. It was an octopus salad. The "sauce" was a mixture of tapenade and mayonnaise. Very nice. It comes from the north.

There are several bodies buried in the same place.
There is some gold here but more in other museums.
Lots of nice pottery from all over Peru. Very different from north to south
The museum is an old house with the kind of courtyard Olga had in mind when she said she wanted an interior patio for our cottage. The cottage is not even close.
Outside the museum is a nice little park.
Afterwards we walked around and found a church where some church members were selling food to raise money. The four of us ate very well for $8.00 in total
Our menu consisted of papa rellena (ground meat wrapped in a mashed potato ball and deep fried; tamales (traditional corn flour tamal); seco de carnero (lamb stew with rice); picarones (these are donut-like things but not made with flour, instead with sweet potato; and tea. Delicious.

That tapenade sauce is also used as a dip for yucca french fries. There used to be a restaurant in Kingston that served it.
Near where we are staying there is a beautiful old apartment building for sale. It has obviously seen better days. hopefully the new owners will fix it up
I mentioned earlier that the traffic is bad. Given free reign, it would also be fast so you see traffic bumps at just about every intersection. This is important because when you need to cross the street you like to know there is a traffic bump between you and the on-coming traffic.
